Summer School 2003

Klausurtagung 2003

Location: First of all some words to the location of the Klausurtagung 2003. The hotel Pochtenalp is situated in the Berneses Highlands, above Kiental. Kiental lies on the way to Kandersteg, just turn left if you arrive to Reichenbach.
By car it's about 40 minutes from Bern, by train 1 hour 45 minutes. The Postauto stop is called Pochtenalp. The critical element in the chain is the Postauto, there are only 6 courses per day. One could take a cab or ride with someone else of the group that is there by car.

Going there: Either by train that leaves Bern at 8:26 and where you arrive Pochtenalp at 10:11 or individually.

Hotel: The Hotel is called Waldrand and is pretty far away from civilization. They do have electric current from their own electricity plant. It is highly recommended to charge batteries and then use electronic devices with battery power supply. There is one bathroom per floor what does not automatically indicate that one should use the same shirt throughout the whole week.
Unfortunately there is only Swisscom mobile as Orange stops the roaming with Swisscom.
There is one fix telephone: 033 676 12 08
It is possible to park the car at the hotel but there is only limited space. About 10 minutes away is a bigger parking where cars usually should be placed if we have too many.

Other Restaurants/Shops: There are 2 restaurants pretty close and one archaic Colonial Waren shop. The next bigger shop is in Kiental, 10 minutes by car, or Reichenbach, 20 minutes by car.

Bikes: It's a bikers' paradise and also reachable from Bern. One could bring luggage there the day before and search one day after.

Mealtimes:
Breakfast: 0730-0900
Lunch: 1200-1230 (if hot)
Dinner: 1900

Presentations: Each member of the group is invited to present actual work. A presentation could look like that: 45 Min Talk 10 Min Break 25 Min Discussion The break can be made in an adequate moment, for example between theory and demo. Discussions should be possible during the whole talk.

Session Chairs: A session chair introduces the speaker and moderates the session.

Breaks: Between each presentation is at least a 15 minutes break.

Evaluation: The talks allow us to improve our presentation style. Everybody is asked to positively comment the other talks. If anybody does not like theses comments he can announce this at the beginning of the talk without giving any justifications.
Some keywords:
-Methods used to reach the goals Report the methods (PowerPoint, flip chart, white board, overhead-projector…) and evaluate if the methods helped to reach the goals.
-Contact with the audience Report if the talker maintains eye contact with the audience, if he includes the audience in its presentation…
-Presentation Evaluate if the talk is structured, if you feel that you got introduced to the topic, anything that is to say about a presentation.
